Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has launched the construction of an intra-city rail network aimed at connecting Maiduguri with its surrounding areas, a pioneering initiative in Nigeria's northern states.

The first phase of this ambitious project will feature 12 terminals throughout Maiduguri, linking vital locations such as markets, schools, public spaces, and economically significant areas.

The rail network is designed to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods, stimulate economic activities, and enhance economic corridors within the state.

During a recent inspection of the proposed rail terminals and routes with the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), Borno's Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, confirmed that feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are currently underway to ensure the project's success.

Once operational, the rail network is expected to transform transportation in Maiduguri by offering a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative.

It will also complement other infrastructure developments in the region, including the expansion of the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East, West, and South ring roads.

In addition to the rail project, Zulum's administration has introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates for residents of Maiduguri. This initiative aims to mitigate the effects of rising transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies.
