The people of Akaeze in the Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State are mourning the heartbreaking loss of their loved ones, who were allegedly attacked and killed by unknown assailants.

Our correspondent observed from different sources, including residents, videos, and photos on Wednesday, that a great number of the victims were farmers who were allegedly attacked on their farmlands on Monday.

Photos and short videos made available to newsmen by people of Akaeze disclosed at least five people lying lifeless on the ground, their bodies and clothing soaked in blood. One of the casualties was seen being placed on a motorcycle, with a nearly severed neck bearing a deep cut.

Meanwhile, the accurate number of casualties remains unknown as residents informed journalists on Wednesday that about seven farmers were killed in what is believed to be a renewed longstanding land conflict between Akaeze and Umuogwor communities, both in the Ivo LGA.

According to an interview with newsmen on Wednesday, a native of Akaeze known as Okoro David described Monday’s killings as “callous and senseless,” asserting that they were part of a series of attacks targeting farmers from Akaeze.

“This meaningless killing of Akaeze people is both disturbing and tragic. It isn’t kind to take innocent lives in such a manner. These assaults have been ongoing for about five months now. On Monday, about seven people were brutally killed while working on their farmlands, and even now, their remains are still being recovered.

“Some of the remains of farmers who lost their lives have been seen and taken to the morgue. We call on the governor and security personnel to intervene and rescue the Akaeze community from these senseless killings.

“We are still looking for some of our people. They only went to the farm to harvest their yam and rice when ambushed. We badly need help. This problem has continued for a long time. Instead of seeking redress through the courts, the community has resorted to violence, killing innocent people day after day,” he added.
