The Nigerian Army has affirmed that they are not responsible for recent killings in the southeastern part of the country.

The military was responding to allegations by Mazi Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ekpa claimed the troops killed innocent people and dumped their bodies in a river.

In a press release by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, yesterday, the Army troops affirmed that the accusations were unfounded, adding that the video evidence used by Ekpa to substantiate his claims was done to stir up anger against the troops.

Ekpa's allegations were described as a malicious and panned campaign of slander which contained some unthinkable and not well-couched falsehoods targeted at whipping up negative sentiments against troops and inciting anarchy in the Southeast geopolitical zone of the country.

Onyema emphasised that the troops in the video made available by Ekpa are not personnel of the Nigerian Army.

He affirmed that the operatives in the video are from the Nigerian Navy and engaged in a routine test firing of a weapon system mounted on a vehicle to ensure the safety of other road users and travellers along the route.

The Army has thoroughly investigated the claims made by Simon Ekpa and his associates. They strongly refute these allegations, which differ significantly from their findings.
