Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, has called for new laws to fully protect widows' rights, well-being, and safety.

In a goodwill message to mark International Widows' Day, he stressed the need for resources and policies that empower widows and allow them to live peacefully.

He urged lawmakers across Nigeria to address the hardship widows face, highlighting the unfair treatment many experience. The Speaker applauded the United Nations (UN) for dedicating a day to the widows, which, he stated, enhances awareness of their struggles.

Udeze also praised the Anambra governor's wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, for prioritising women's issues, especially those affecting widows, by working to improve their lives.

He noted that the proposed law, if enacted by the state legislature, would prohibit widowhood malpractices and advised traditional rulers in the state to abolish harmful laws against widows in their various domains.

The Speaker appealed to wealthy Nigerians to help improve widows' lives in their communities. He also encouraged widows to conduct themselves with dignity and trust in God for ultimate protection.
