The Obiorah family of Enugwu-Aguleri, in the Anambra East local government area of Anambra State, has accused the Nigeria Police of killing their son, Ebuka Obiorah, at the Awkuzu Police Station. They have filed a lawsuit against the police and hired a lawyer to seek justice.

Awkuzu Police Station, once notorious for its connection to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), is again facing allegations of abuse.

It was gathered that Ebuka Obiorah visited his village from Onitsha and never returned home. The police later informed his brother that he had died in custody.

Maduka Obiorah, Ebuka's brother, believes his brother was wrongfully apprehended and detained at Otuocha Police Station. He said his family was unaware of Ebuka's detention until a friend informed them.

Recounting the pathetic story, Maduka Obiorah said: “I saw my brother healthy at Awkuzu Police Station, and 24 hours later, police announced he passed on inside the cell.

He continued: “At Otuocha, a police officer told me to speak with an inspector who was the investigating officer. He said my brother had been released on bail from Otuocha, but I didn't understand how he ended up at Awkuzu Police Station.

“When I saw my brother on Saturday, I noticed his right leg was broken, but I don't know what caused the injury. A police officer at SARS said we could get my brother out on bail because it was a mistake. At Awkuzu, the police told me that people from our community had given them my brother's name.

He said the issue started two months ago when a land dispute led to someone allegedly murdered and beheaded.
