Madu Onuorah, an Abuja-based journalist, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged defamation of a US-based Reverend Sister. Enugu Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, clarified that Onuorah wasn't abducted.

According to newsmen, operatives of the Ebonyi State Police Command apprehended Onuorah and handed him over to personnel of the Enugu State Police Command.

It was further learned that Onuorah was apprehended over a petition written by a Reverend Sister residing in the United States to the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, accusing the journalist of defamation.

Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, hinted in a press statement on Thursday that Onuorah was apprehended in Abuja by men of the Ebonyi State Police Command.

The statement read, The Enugu State Police Command is in receipt of several publications alleging the kidnapping of an Abuja-based online news publisher, one Madu Onuorah.

The command wishes to note that contrary to the accusations, he was duly apprehended in Abuja with the help of personnel of the Ebonyi State Police Command and the aid of intelligence, after efforts made to formally invite him failed.

Meanwhile, his apprehension was following the receipt of a written petition to the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, against him over an alleged defamatory publication he made against a US-based Reverend Sister.

Ndukwe noted that the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the office handling the case to professionally investigate and make sure that justice prevails.

He urged journalists, especially the leadership and members of the Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, and associates of the suspect, to exercise patience, promising that the needful will be done in the case.
