Obi Aguocha, a Nigerian lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State, met with former president Buhari to discuss the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Kanu is on trial for treason after being arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria in July 2021, after he fled the country in the wake of the military raid on his home during the tenure of Buhari. He recently denounced violence linked to the separatist movement.

The IPOB leader has remained in detention since then, facing many charges.

The lawmaker, as part of efforts to start a dialogue for a political solution to free the IPOB leader, visited Buhari in his Daura country home on Saturday, June 29, 2024.

Aguocha apologised for Kanu's past actions and argued for a political solution, but Buhari said the courts would decide Kanu's fate.

However, Aguocha's team says Buhari commended his efforts and suggested Kanu might be open to dialogue for a united Nigeria.

Aguocha also gathered support from other lawmakers to urge the current government to consider a way to release Kanu.
