Two police officers have been confirmed dead and three others left unconscious following an attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the 'Shi'ite' group.

The incident occurred at Wuse Junction in Abuja on Sunday.

According to a statement released by the FCT Police Command, the group launched an unprovoked assault on officers stationed at a police checkpoint near the traffic light. The attackers, armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives, reportedly set three police patrol vehicles ablaze during the violent encounter.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack, describing it as a brutal and senseless act of violence. He assured the public that those responsible for the incident would be brought to justice. "The situation is presently under control, and normalcy has been restored," CP Igweh said in the statement.

The police have made several arrests in connection with the attack, and investigations are ongoing. The identities of the deceased officers have not yet been released, and the three unconscious officers are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
