Ten people, including a 17-year-old girl, were rescued from the rubble of a four-story building that collapsed at 15 Iga Idungaran Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State, Friday. Thankfully, there were no fatalities.

The collapse occurred near the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu’s palace, on Lagos Island at 11 a.m. Witnesses at the scene reported that the immediate cause of the collapse was due to ongoing renovation work being carried out on the residential building.

The structure had already been marked for evacuation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) before it eventually collapsed.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Police, quickly arrived at the scene to rescue the trapped victims.

This incident occurred just four days after a mosque collapsed on Yusuf Street, Papa Ajao, in the Mushin area, resulting in the deaths of three worshippers, including a 12-year-old boy.

Dr. Femí Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, stated that the victims trapped under the rubble were rescued through the combined efforts of the emergency responders. To facilitate the rescue operation, the entire area was cordoned off. The ten victims included seven adult males and two females.

Demolition of the collapsed building was ongoing at the time of reporting.
