Letby was found guilty of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The court verdict was delivered by Justice Goss on Friday, August 18. Letby was accused of deliberately injecting air into some babies, poisoning others with insulin, and force-feeding infants with milk.
According to reports from BBC, Letby's absence from the court was noted during the verdict announcement. Justice Goss characterized Letby's actions as "truly horrific" and condemned her deliberate violation of the fundamental duty to care for and nurture babies. The presiding judge sentenced her to multiple life imprisonments for both the murders and attempted murders.
Justice Goss noted the severe breach of trust committed by Letby, stating, "You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies and in gross breach of the trust that all citizens place in those who work in the medical and caring professions."
During the trial, evidence revealed that the police had searched Letby's residence and discovered handover sheets related to the first four babies she had murdered. The judge characterized Letby's actions as exhibiting malevolence bordering on sadism.
Justice Goss further noted that throughout the trial, Letby demonstrated a lack of remorse and denied any responsibility for her actions. He highlighted that there were no mitigating factors in her case. The judge also mentioned that copies of the ruling would be provided to the convict and the parents who had tragically lost their children due to her actions.
