The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has issued a warning to Nigerians residing in Lebanon, urging them to consider leaving the country amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran.
This advisory follows Iran's recent launch of approximately 180 ballistic missiles directed at Israel, marking a significant intensification of regional tensions.
NiDCOM's spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, emphasized the urgency of the situation in a statement released on Wednesday. The commission noted that commercial flights are still operational, providing a viable means for Nigerians to exit Lebanon safely.
In light of the ongoing conflict, NiDCOM reported that many Nigerians have already moved from the more dangerous southern regions of Lebanon to areas deemed safer. However, the commission underscored the necessity for all citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety until a ceasefire is established.
The statement read: “Worried by the attacks on Hezbollah and other areas in Lebanon by the Israeli government, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission hereby advises Nigerians resident in Lebanon to consider leaving the country now that commercial flights are still in operation.”
It further highlighted that while many have relocated to safer locations, it is crucial for them to stay alert until hostilities cease.
NiDCOM expressed relief that no Nigerian citizens have reported injuries or adverse effects from the ongoing conflict thus far. The commission also encouraged Nigerians in Lebanon to maintain communication with the Nigerian Embassy for timely updates and assistance regarding their safety.
In addition, Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, urged all Nigerians in Lebanon to contact their high commission for necessary documentation and potential evacuation.
