WHO Africa Regional Director-Elect Passes Away at 55
Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the newly elected World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, has passed away at the age of 55.
He died on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, while receiving medical treatment in India.
Born in 1969, Ndugulile was a prominent Tanzanian politician and public health expert. In August 2024, he was nominated to succeed Dr. Matshidiso Moeti as the Regional Director for WHO Africa, following a vote by African member states during the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee held in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo.
His appointment was set to be confirmed by the WHO Executive Board in February 2025.
The news of his death prompted an outpouring of condolences from various leaders and organizations. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed his shock and sadness on social media, offering heartfelt condolences to Ndugulile's family and the people of Tanzania.
Similarly, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti described his passing as an immense loss for the organization and the continent.
Dr. Mulombo Kazadi, WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, also shared his grief, stating that Ndugulile's death is a devastating blow for Africa and the world.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania joined in mourning, highlighting Ndugulile's contributions to public health and governance.
