The Sokoto State Ministry of Health has raised an alert over increasing cases of meningitis in several local government areas within the state.
Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, the Commissioner of Health, issued a statement on Tuesday urging residents to exercise heightened vigilance as laboratory investigations confirmed meningitis in many suspected cases.
In response to the outbreak, the ministry has intensified its efforts in disease surveillance, case management, and public health interventions to limit the spread of the illness.
Dr. Abubakar emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment, advising citizens to seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, or other unusual signs.
The commissioner also highlighted preventive measures, including maintaining good personal and environmental hygiene, avoiding crowded areas, and ensuring proper ventilation in homes and public spaces. He called on residents to report any suspected cases or unusual illnesses to nearby health facilities.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu has supported the state's response by ensuring that all health facilities are equipped with necessary medications to manage the outbreak effectively.
