Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the allocation of funds earmarked for the health sector in the 2025 budget.

He expressed concern that past instances of bizarre claims involving animals being blamed for missing public funds should not be repeated with the $1.07 billion allocated to healthcare.

In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku urged President Bola Tinubu's administration to ensure that every detail of how these funds will be used is made public. He stressed that given Nigeria's dwindling resources and challenges in healthcare services, it is crucial that every kobo budgeted for health is utilized effectively.

Atiku highlighted recent years' trends where fantastical claims about animals were used to explain missing funds without proper investigation or consequences. He emphasized that mechanisms must be put in place for public audits and accountability regarding this substantial appropriation.

Furthermore, Atiku criticized the government for lacking a clear framework detailing how over $1 billion would be spent in primary healthcare. He argued that while investing in healthcare is vital, there is a moral obligation on the part of government officials to disclose exactly how these significant sums will be disbursed.

The former Vice President noted that Nigerians have a right to know specifics about these allocations and any associated loans. Therefore, he called for accompanying policy frameworks explaining fund disbursement alongside budget announcements.
