The report, called "the 2023 Progress Report" revealed that Nigeria accounts for 29 percent of the global toll in 290,000 maternal deaths cases every year and may miss its target to reduce those numbers by 2030.

The country also ranked highest globally in incidences of neonatal and child deaths.  The report identified eight other countries with high levels of maternal, neonatal and stillbirths including Pakistan, the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Since 2015, Nigerians have experienced stagnant maternal and infant mortality rates.

The World Health Organization has warned that Nigeria, along with 59 other countries, is at risk of failing to reach the maternal and newborn mortality reduction targets outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The report showed that Nigeria had the second-highest number of women dying from pregnancy-related problems in the last three years, even though disruptions caused by COVID-19 contributed to this trend.

Among the many factors of global concern are growing poverty, worsening humanitarian conditions and inadequate funding for countries around the world.
