The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and key stakeholders have agreed to increase the tariffs for medicines and healthcare services provided under the national health insurance program.

The agreement was reached at a stakeholder engagement meeting in Abuja, where it was decided to raise the capitation rate by 60% and the Fee-For-Service rate by 40%.

Capitation and Fee-For-Service are the payment mechanisms used to reimburse healthcare providers for services rendered to NHIA beneficiaries.

The new tariffs will take immediate effect and apply to the current services offered under the NHIA. However, the new pricing structure is not prejudiced by the ongoing actuarial studies commissioned by the authority, the results of which are expected in September.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Association of Private Medical Practitioners, Health Maintenance Organisations, the Guild of Medical Directors, and other key players in the health insurance ecosystem. They endorsed a six-point communique with various resolutions.

To ensure transparency and alignment with sector developments, the forum agreed to hold quarterly meetings.

In his remarks, the NHIA Director General, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, emphasized that affordable and quality healthcare for enrollees remains the top priority, urging stakeholders to prioritize the interests of Nigerians.

He also stressed the importance of stakeholder cooperation in achieving universal health coverage, assuring them of the authority's continued close and cordial relationship.
