Former Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi revealed how his father died as a result of medical staff negligence at an undisclosed private hospital.

“My father died because of the negligence of that private hospital,” the lawmaker representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly said during the screening of Mariya Mahmoud, a ministerial nominee from Kano State.

Mahmoud, a former Kano State Commissioner for Higher Education, identified herself as a medical doctor and public health practitioner. She was President Bola Tinubu's replacement for Maryam Shetty, a female Kano nominee who was dropped in a sudden turn of events last Friday.

During her screening on Monday, Umahi, who is also one of the President's 48 ministerial nominee, urged Mahmoud to explain to the Senate how she intends to address cases of conflict of interest in which doctors in government hospitals also float private medical centres.

The Senator expressed regret that his late father was taken to a government hospital and treated by a doctor when he became unwell. He did, however, claim that the doctor referred his late father to a private facility operated by the doctor.

Umahi claimed his father died as a result of medical negligence at the private hospital.

Mahmoud agreed with Umahi, stating that doctors working in government institutions who also work at private medical centres have an impact on the quality of healthcare in society.

“It is something we have to look into and see what are the things to be done to strengthen the issue.”
