The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, has announced the selection of 50 local chefs for the inaugural Eko Flavours Competition.
The Eko Flavours Competition is a culinary platform where food vendors and chefs can display their skills and engage with food enthusiasts, beginning with a structured shopping experience at a designated market.
At a press conference held in Ikeja, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abiola Olusanya, revealed that the competition attracted over 150 applications.
After a thorough review, 70 candidates were shortlisted, with the final 50 chosen based on one-minute video submissions that articulated their motivation for participating.
Olusanya emphasized the project’s goal of fostering a culture of healthy eating and enhancing the overall food system in Lagos.
She described the Eko Flavours Project as a transformative initiative that not only showcases the culinary talents of local youths and vendors but also positions Lagos as a culinary hub in Nigeria.
The competition is structured in stages, leading from the initial selection to quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately the grand finale. Public voting will play a crucial role in determining the top 20 finalists, ensuring a transparent and fair selection process.
Jennifer Odufuwa, Co-CEO of Tantacom Group, highlighted the importance of involving stakeholders in the selection process to maintain fairness and transparency. She noted that the quality of submissions has met expectations.
Winners of the competition will receive significant rewards, including the title of Eko Flavours Champion Ambassador for one year, a cash prize of N5 million, an award plaque, a year’s supply of products, and a N200,000 shopping voucher for the Mushin Fresh Food Hub.
The first runner-up will receive N3 million, while the second runner-up will be awarded N1 million. Additional cash prizes will be given to the fourth and fifth place contestants.
