In response to the emergence of the newly identified XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been detected in 29 countries, the federal government has instructed chief medical directors and medical directors of tertiary hospitals to activate alert systems for patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms.

A circular dated December 5, 2024, and issued by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, emphasized the need for heightened vigilance due to the variant's growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential public health impact.

The circular stated, “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, reported in Australia and now confirmed in 29 countries globally. This variant has demonstrated a growth advantage over other strains, necessitating immediate action.”

Hospitals are urged to implement alert systems for a high index of suspicion in patients with symptoms resembling COVID-19. The directive also calls for collaboration among health institutions to share critical data and enhance monitoring protocols related to this strain.

Dr. Anuma highlighted the importance of timely information sharing among stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, to ensure effective response strategies.

He reassured recipients of the circular that their cooperation is vital in managing this emerging threat.

As the XEC variant continues to spread, health authorities are on high alert, emphasizing that existing vaccines should still provide protection against severe cases associated with this new strain.
