Sen. Sahabi Ya'u (APC-Zamfara) has sponsored free surgery and care for 3,000 people with eye conditions.
The senator reportedly just signalled the start of a free medical outreach program aimed at more than 5,000 disadvantaged people, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Dr. Kamal Umar, the outreach's medical team leader, made this revelation to reporters on Monday at General Hospital Kaura-Namoda, the outreach's location in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area.
According to Umar, the medical care, surgeries, and medications helped 3,000 eye patients, most of whom were women, children, and elderly people in vulnerable situations.
“The beneficiaries were drawn from Kaura-Namoda, Birnin-Magaji, Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs
“We have provided glasses, free transportation and feeding for the treated patients from the four LGAs.
“We will refer few complicated health cases recorded from the outreach to various tertiary health institutions,” Umar added.
Alhaji Abba Isah, the outreach coordinator, explained that the intervention's goal was to help people who required support but lacked the financial means to pay for medical care.
Abba pointed out that the intention behind the act was to make medical care more affordable for common people.
“The exercise is part of the lawmaker’s intervention to the current economic challenges due to fuel subsidy removal.
“Other beneficiaries of the outreach also benefitted from hernia surgery, dental services, hypertension and diabetes services, among others,” he explained.
