VC Defends 170 Admission Cut-Off Mark for Kogi State University
The Vice Chancellor of Kogi State University, Kabba Prof. Kehinde Imisi Temitope Eniola, has supported the fixing of 170 as the minimum cut-off mark for university admission against the 140 standard by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The VC affirmed that decreasing the cutoff mark lower than 170 does not speak well of the university and that he will not yield to the demands of those asking for him to lower the admission mark.
The university Don, who spoke on Friday at the school premises during the end-of-year program of the institution, affirmed that he was aware that the university should have resolved to the 140 score to attract many students, but doing so will be against the goal of the school in establishing a high standard.
“Many people have condemned us for having a high admission score. However, our goal is not to generate revenue but to provide a high-quality education that we can be proud of.
“Placing 170 as an admission standard is not too high. We know that as a new university, we should be concerned about admitting many students, but lowering our standard just to attract students will only give the school revenue and support mediocrity.
The VC, however, urged those who could not meet the minimum of 170 but were interested in the new university to apply for an “A” level course, emphasising that such students would be given priority in the next academic year.
Prof. Eniola also disclosed that the university will be enrolling 1,750 out of the 3500 candidates who chose the university as their first choice for the 2024/2025 academic year.
He announced that the new citadel of learning started academic sessions in January 2023 with 1,200 students.
