Prof. Tanko Ishaya, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, has expressed concern over the significant shortage of hostel accommodation available to students on campus.
During a visit from alumni of the Faculty of Law from the class of 1988, Ishaya highlighted that the university currently accommodates over 45,000 students, yet only a mere seven percent reside in on-campus housing.
The Vice-Chancellor attributed this situation to a lack of adequate hostel facilities, resulting in more than 90 percent of students needing to find accommodation off-campus.
He emphasized that the university is actively seeking solutions through public-private partnerships to improve this situation.
In addition to the accommodation challenges, Ishaya noted that the university's electricity expenses have surged to over 80 million Naira per month.
To address this rising cost, plans are underway to establish a solar farm aimed at providing sustainable energy for both the institution and its surrounding community.
During the meeting, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, represented by The Plateau State Head of Service Mr. Rauta Dakok, expressed his commitment to supporting the university's initiatives and acknowledged its efforts in maintaining high academic standards.
Mr. Emeka Etieba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and leader of the visiting alumni group, stated that their reunion was an opportunity to assess current challenges facing the university.
He indicated that understanding these issues would enable alumni to make informed decisions regarding potential interventions to support their alma mater.
