President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointments of 555 individuals to serve as Pro-Chancellors/Chairpersons and members of Governing Boards for 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and Colleges of Education. This decision follows the President's assent to a list of nominees selected by the Ministry of Education.

The appointments include a chairperson and four members for each of the institutions. The Ministry of Education, through its Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, has released an advertorial detailing the appointments.

The inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils will take place on Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission in Abuja. Both events will commence at 9:00 am daily.

When contacted for confirmation, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the list originated from the Ministry of Education and that the ministry has the authority to release it.

These appointments come shortly after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to embark on another strike, potentially disrupting the academic calendar and causing further setbacks in the country's higher education sector.

ASUU had decried the failure of the Federal Government to appoint Governing Councils for federal universities and faulted the perceived nonchalant attitude of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government towards matters concerning academics in federal universities.
