Two students from the Federal University in Wukari, Taraba State, who were abducted two weeks ago, have been released.

Mrs. Ashu Agbu, the Head of the Information and Protocol Unit at the university, confirmed their release via a WhatsApp message to our correspondent on Friday. However, she did not provide details about the release of the students.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N50 million last week. The victims, Joshua Sardauna of the Economics Department and Obianu Elizabeth of the Microbiology Department, were kidnapped near a shop close to the university on Wednesday, April 3, around 10:00 pm.

It was reported that the students were on campus to retake exams due to previous session carry-overs when they were abducted. On Monday, April 3, 2024, gunmen believed to be herdsmen stormed the Federal University Wukari and kidnapped the two students.

Mr. Sule Gani, the university's Chief Security Officer, verified the incident in a phone interview with journalists in Jalingo. He identified the assailants as armed Fulani herdsmen who kidnapped a male and a female ex-student present on campus to sit for their carry-over examinations.

Gani noted that the herdsmen launched an attack on the university and seized the two students as they were dining at a campus food vendor's shop.
