In February, 2022 the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) commenced the registration for 2022 NYSC Batch ‘A ‘candidates. Then I was in Lagos State for a brief holiday. When I learnt that the NYSC portal was open for registration, I waited till the 4th day after the opening of their portal because I had communicated with a few of my mates and they complained of having challenges with the registration as a result of network issues. It’s no longer news that traffic causes technical issues in a web site, I said to myself silently.
I was discouraged from going to Cyber Café for the registration the first two days due to the feedback I got from friends.
Meanwhile, on the fourth day, I went to LASU (Lagos State University, Ojo precisely for my registration). Before going to LASU, I had checked the requirements for registration through the NYSC portal @ (www.nysc.com ) and penned down all the necessary requirements for the registration in a piece of paper because, I didn’t save the details in my phone due to some technical issues my phone was having at the moment.
I arrived at LASU before 12 noon on that precious day and headed to the Cyber Café there for my registration.
I met a lot of youngsters whom I assumed were students working as affiliate marketers there. They were about 5 in number, persuading me so I could follow them to their various shops.
They said in unison! “We are open for your services; we do photocopying, printing, typing and online registrations.”
I was in a state of dilemma at the moment because I didn’t know whose offer to accept.
Then, I followed the first person who called me to their shop, told him the services I needed and he said,
Oh! Sorry, we don’t do NYSC registration here.
Henceforth, he took me to their neighbor who does the registration.
Interestingly, it was a young yoruba woman, elegantly dressed with a hijab covering her hair. I assumed she’s a Muslim because of her appearance.
We exchanged pleasantries and she asked to enquire from me about the kind of services I wanted.
I told her I want to register for NYSC and she asked if I had a hard copy of the passport photograph and I replied No!!
Then she started by capturing my face with her camera using a white background as instructed by the NYSC Scheme.
I was charged 5 hundred naira for 8 copies of the passport.
Additionally, we started with the registration this time. She requested my email address, the name of the institution I graduated from and my school registration number. I wrote them out for her on a piece of paper and she logged into the NYSC portal with my details to find out if my institution had uploaded their senate list.
When she checked and saw the list from my institution, she looked for my name and found it, then continued with other registration processes.
After the registration, she instructed me to be checking my mail constantly for my green card. They will send you a message via email, she said!
I paid her the sum of 5000 naira for her services and left.
