Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the monarch of Oke Ila in Osun State, has explained the vital role of quality education in combating poverty in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 14th convocation lecture of Achievers University in Owo, Ondo State, he urged government officials at all levels to enhance their investment in education to ensure that every child has access to quality learning opportunities.
In his lecture titled “Modelling quality education for the reach of the vulnerable,” Abolarin highlighted that poverty significantly obstructs many Nigerians from receiving quality education.
He stressed that to effectively address this issue, educational resources must be made available to all children, particularly those from low-income families, migrants, indigenous communities, and individuals with disabilities.
Abolarin, who is also an educationist, emphasized that quality education transcends mere enrollment in schools; it encompasses creating a flexible, affordable, accessible, and inclusive learning environment.
He articulated that quality education is essential for empowering individuals to lead productive lives and break the cycles of poverty that hinder sustainable development.
The monarch called for increased governmental investment in education, particularly in underdeveloped regions.
He advocated for community engagement to tackle cultural barriers such as child marriage that impede educational access and recommended leveraging technology to offer remote learning opportunities in areas with limited access to schools.
“Quality education is more than just attending school; it must serve as a transformative force,” he stated.
Abolarin's commitment to these ideals is reflected in his establishment of Abolarin College, which provides free education to indigent students and aims to equip them with skills for future success.
