The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has recently announced the approval of over N20 billion for disbursement to nearly 193,000 students enrolled in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria. This significant funding initiative, confirmed in an update shared on social media, took effect on January 1, 2025.
According to Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director of NELFUND, this latest allocation follows the agency's previous disbursement of N110 billion aimed at supporting students nationwide.
The recent funding is expected to provide substantial financial assistance to a range of institutions, with Bayero University in Kano receiving the highest amount—approximately N1.3 billion for 11,683 students. The University of Maiduguri follows closely, with 12,198 students set to share N1.27 billion.
Other notable allocations include N941 million for 6,988 students at the University of Jos and N909 million for 8,978 students at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma.
Meanwhile, smaller institutions like Gombe State Polytechnic and Abia State Polytechnic will see minimal disbursements, reflecting the varying scales of student enrollment across different universities.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Nigerian government to enhance access to higher education through financial support mechanisms. The fund aims not only to alleviate the financial burdens faced by students but also to promote educational equity across regions.
