The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has officially announced the receipt of a two million Naira repayment from Adegboyega Awomolo, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former beneficiary of the federal government’s student loan program from the 1970s.
In a statement released on Friday in Abuja by Monalisa Dike from the Corporate Communications Department, it was noted that Awomolo utilized a loan of one thousand Naira during his undergraduate studies at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) between 1975 and 1977.
Awomolo expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian government for the opportunity provided by the loan, which he acknowledged had a significant impact on his educational journey.
In a letter addressed to NELFUND's Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, he detailed his appreciation for the support and commended NELFUND for its transparency and accountability in the management of student loans.
Despite facing challenges in repaying the loan over the years, Awomolo's recent payment of two million Naira serves as a final settlement of his debt, adjusted for inflation and fulfilling his obligations to the nation.
Dike emphasized that this repayment not only explains the importance of educational support but also highlights the ongoing relevance of NELFUND in facilitating access to education for Nigerian students.
The funds received will be allocated to assist current students in need of financial support, reinforcing NELFUND's mission to empower future generations regardless of their financial backgrounds.
