The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned a recent incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where a student allegedly assaulted a lecturer over a TikTok video recording.

The association's Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, emphasized that while NANS advocates for students' rights and academic freedom, it also upholds discipline and respect for authority within educational institutions.

Akinteye noted that acts of violence have no place in academic settings, which are built on mutual respect between students and lecturers. He stressed that students' right to self-expression must be exercised responsibly and with respect for others.

The reported assault is seen as an embarrassment to the student body and does not align with the values of the Nigerian student community.

NANS does not support any behavior that disrespects lecturers or tarnishes the image of academic institutions. The association called for a thorough investigation into the incident by UNIZIK's management to ensure fairness and justice are served according to institutional regulations.

In response to this incident, Nnamdi Azikiwe University has initiated an investigation under its Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu. The university is committed to maintaining high moral standards and ensuring discipline within its community.

Akinteye urged students nationwide to address grievances through appropriate channels while avoiding misconduct that could harm their future prospects. He expressed confidence in the university's ability to handle the situation fairly and uphold educational integrity.
