Industry-related research in tertiary institutions has been identified by the minister of education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, as being essential to achieving national development.

During a briefing from the heads of the parastatals and agencies under the ministry's supervision on Monday in Abuja, Mamman made this known.

According to him, “the Federal Government is determined to support research linked to industry so as to synchronise research and the industrial sector in order to accelerate national development.”

The minister urged academicians to view research as going beyond professional progress and promotion, stressing that overall national development must come before all other factors.

Additionally, he pledged to take every measure in his power to support industry-based research

Dr Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, expressed the government's commitment to helping the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) advance industry-based research.

He continued by saying that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would make every effort to remove any barriers to funding for research.

Earlier in his briefing, TETFUND Executive Secretary Sonny Echono noted that the fund had supported more than 65,000 tertiary staff members to attend national and international conferences, workshops, and training programs over the previous two years.

Echono noted that funding for research at universities resulted in the publication and public presentation of more than 60 books in 2022 during a briefing on crucial investments being made by the Fund in high-impact initiatives, disaster, recovery, and grant funding.

In the upcoming years, more novels would be released at specific publishing companies within the six geopolitical zones, he noted.
