The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced an indefinite strike starting today, October 28, 2024, effectively shutting down all university activities across Nigeria.
In a statement released on Sunday, signed by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi, the unions expressed that their ultimatum to the Federal Government regarding the withholding of four months' salaries expired at midnight on October 27.
The unions are demanding not only the payment of these withheld salaries but also improved remuneration and the implementation of agreements made in 2009.
The Federal Government previously invoked a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy during a prolonged strike by university-based unions in 2022.
Although President Bola Tinubu directed the payment of some withheld salaries last October, non-teaching staff have yet to receive any compensation, leading to accusations of selective treatment from the unions.
The JAC emphasized that all state-owned universities should align their local demands with the national strike action. They urged strict compliance from all NASU and SSANU branches across federal and state universities as well as inter-university centers.
