The British Council, in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission, has trained selected teachers from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory in English Language proficiency.
The Strengthening Teachers English Proficiency capacity-building training in Lagos was unveiled by the British Council’s Director of Programmes, Chikodi Onyemerela.
The five-day training, which commenced on Monday, August 14, is part of the British Council’s English portfolio where they support teachers of English Language and other subjects to improve their proficiency in the use of the English Language.
Onyemerela said, “It is important that teachers are empowered with the right use of the English language to be able to deliver effectively other subjects in English.
“The British Council has extended a hand to partner with the government in achieving the objectives of the new National Language Policy using our experience on what has worked in many countries.
“Let me say that we maximize our presence in over 100 countries and in 220 locations worldwide to draw experiences and insight into what has worked in various jurisdictions and in a similar context to support the government, institutions and practitioners in Nigeria. We will continue to offer helping hands at all levels of education in Nigeria and as a result, continue to strengthen the UK-Nigeria relationship in this sector.”
Each state, including the FCT, had four participants present at the training.
Onyemerela said the participants would mentor and replicate the training to other teachers in their various states.
Speaking on the selection of participants, the Director, Teacher Development, UBEC, Olumayowa Aleshin, said the people present were from Colleges of Education or training institutions.
“We didn’t make the selection. The selections were made by the State Universal Basic Education board from the training institutions to their states,” Aleshin said.
According to the British Council’s Head of English for Education Systems, Fwanshishak Daniel, STEP also includes other subjects as it shows teachers how to navigate from their mother tongue to English and vice versa.
