The Branch Chairman of the union, Prof. Haruna-Mohammed Jibril, disclosed this during an interaction with newsmen on Saturday in Zaria.
Jibril stated, "During its National Executive Council meeting at Gombe State University in February 2018, the union instituted a scholarship scheme for indigent students across all branches."
He further explained that under the scheme, the national union awarded N200,000 to two beneficiaries of the grant to support these indigent students in their academic pursuits.
The chairman highlighted that the national union encouraged branches to follow suit. Consequently, the ABU Chapter extended additional scholarships to two students from 2018 to 2022.
“This year, when we came back from our meeting at Kaduna State University, we briefed the congress and the congress approved the upward review of the grant to N1.6m,’’ he said.
He added that the N1.6m for eight beneficiaries was in addition to the initial N400,000 for two beneficiaries from the national body, bringing the total to N2m.
He clarified that the ASUU ABU Chapter distributed the grant because the students had initiated registration for the new session, prompting its decision for the early release of funds to beneficiaries.
According to him, the beneficiaries are bright students with a minimum CGPA of 3.0, and they also have a history of financial challenges.
Jibril stated that, in addition to the scholarship grants to indigent students, ASUU had also supplied N50 million worth of palliatives to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across northern Nigeria.
