Anambra Govt Threatens Closure of 2,000 Unaccredited Schools

Urged parents in the state to enrol their children at only government-approved schools.

Anambra State plans to close over 2,000 unaccredited schools operating in the state as primary and secondary schools are set to resume for first term academic activities across the state on September 17.

This was revealed by the state commissioner for information,  Sir Paul Nwosu, in a press release on Thursday. He noted that the affected schools could be shut down if the owners did not obtain the proper approvals and accreditation.

Nwosu revealed the schools were found to be operating unlawfully in all 21 local government areas in Anambra during the state’s recent evaluation of approved schools.

He said, “The Anambra State government is worried about nearly 2,000 unaccredited/unapproved schools operating across 21 local government areas in the state.

This is unjustifiable, given the priority that the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, a first-class academic himself, has a strong commitment to quality education.

“Establishing and running a school without necessary approval is evidence that the school is not running in agreement with the standards set by the government through the Ministry of Education.

“The government believes that all children in Anambra State, regardless of where they live, should have the best learning environment, teachers, and curriculum.”

Additionally, Nwosu disclosed that the state government has instructed all the impacted schools whose names are listed to get the requirements for proper approval and registration from the Anambra State Ministry of Education and take immediate steps to adhere before the opening of schools.

“Schools that fail to follow these rules will attract dire sanctions and risk closure,” he warned.

Nwosu said that the list of accredited schools will be issued to the Education Departments of the Local Governments through the Transition Committee Chairmen for easy access.
