The President of the Alumni Association of Girls Academy, located on Simpson Street in Lagos Island, Mrs. Amudat Oshigunwa, has expressed concern about an electric pole within the school premises, describing it as a "death trap."
Speaking with journalists after a visit to the school by some members of the association on Thursday, Oshigunwa emphasized the urgent need for the state government to remove the pole.
Oshigunwa noted that flooding has been a recurring issue in the school, particularly during rainy seasons. She highlighted that the recent flooding was worse than previous occurrences, with the electricity pole now posing a significant risk.
The pole's wires are positioned on the school roof, and children are present in the area. Oshigunwa warned that if a thunderstorm strikes, the pole could fall on the roof, endangering the lives of the children.
The alumni president stressed that the children's safety is paramount and that the pole should not be located where it is. She added that the school management had mentioned the pole as a pressing issue, and the association is appealing to the Lagos State Government and the Lagos Island Local Government to assist in removing the pole.
Oshigunwa also suggested that a good drainage system should be installed to facilitate the flow of water around the area, which she believes is the root cause of the flooding.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Chairman of Lagos Island East LCDA, Hon. Muibi Folawiyo, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to phone calls.
