The newly appointed Special Adviser on Culture and Entertainment, Hannatu Musa Musawa, has unveiled an ambitious plan to propel Nigeria's creative economy and establish the country as Africa's foremost cultural and entertainment capital.
In a recent interview with journalists in Abuja, Musawa emphasized the objective of delivering a national strategy aligned with President Tinubu's vision to double Nigeria's national economy to $1 trillion within eight years.
"This administration has a transformative agenda that prioritizes the Nigerian people. Our plans for the creative sector will echo this commitment by fostering an era where the government actively engages with and supports the abundant talent in our country, thereby building a dynamic sector that rivals global cultural powerhouses," stated Musawa.
The initiative, aptly named "Destination 2030," aims to harmonize all segments of the creative industry under a single vision: positioning Nigeria as Africa's creative, cultural, and entertainment hub. This inclusive approach will encompass literature, music, film, design, visual arts, and heritage, all geared towards projecting Nigeria's cultural identity on the global stage.
According to Musawa, a thriving creative and cultural economy can serve as a powerful catalyst for overall growth and offers Nigeria an opportunity to fast-track its development trajectory. By implementing this plan, the sector could significantly contribute to the country's economic expansion, bolster the national GDP, and generate much-needed employment opportunities for talented youth within the industry. Notably, the creative economy, culture, and tourism collectively contribute more to the global GDP than traditional Oil & Gas production, underlining the immense potential of this sector.
"Nigeria currently enjoys unprecedented global cultural influence, coupled with a progressive administration. The time has come to wholeheartedly support the talents and institutions that drive our cultural, entertainment, and creative economy," added Musawa.
With Afrobeats and Nollywood firmly embedded in global pop culture and a wealth of both veteran and contemporary talent across various creative fields, Nigeria stands at a pinnacle moment in its cultural impact.
To realize this ambitious vision, the strategy will involve forging public-private partnerships and initiating funding programs. The focus will be on implementing strategic initiatives, educational opportunities, and dedicated spaces that eliminate existing barriers hindering individual and industry growth.
