The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has announced that an increase in telecom tariffs is imminent, but it will not reach the 100 percent hike that operators have been advocating.

Speaking at a stakeholders' meeting with mobile network operators in Abuja, Tijani emphasized ongoing consultations to determine a more acceptable rate. He reassured the public that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would soon finalize and disclose the new tariffs.

Tijani noted recent agitation from telecom companies for a substantial tariff increase, stating, "You have seen over the past weeks that there has been agitation from some of these companies to increase tariffs. They are requesting for 100 percent tariff increase. But it will not be by 100 percent."

He highlighted the government's intention to balance consumer protection with the need for telecom companies to continue their investments in infrastructure.

In addition, Tijani remarked on the federal government's commitment to actively participate in infrastructure investments, rather than leaving it solely to private entities.

He pointed out that while discussions about tariff increases are necessary, the focus should also be on achieving meaningful connectivity and high-quality service for consumers.

Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, echoed Tijani's sentiments, indicating that while stakeholders are eager for clarity on the percentage of the proposed increases, further engagements are necessary before any final decisions are made. He assured that updates would be provided within a week or two.

Airtel Nigeria's CEO, represented by spokesperson Femi Adeniran, underscored the necessity of tariff adjustments due to rising operational costs. Adeniran stated that these adjustments are critical for ensuring long-term sustainability in the sector while delivering benefits to consumers.
