In an announcement made by the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Abimbola Akinajo, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line has achieved a milestone by transporting approximately two million passengers within its first year of operation.
The Blue Line was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023 and commenced operation on September 4, 2023, following extensive testing.
Akinajo highlighted that this rail line is the first of its kind in West Africa and operates on electric power, marking a significant advancement in the region's transportation infrastructure.
Akinajo expressed satisfaction with the safety record of the Blue Line, stating, “We have been able to activate the vision of Mr. Governor for an inter-modal integrated transport system."
She emphasized the transformative impact of the project on the lives of Lagos residents, noting that it connects key areas from Marina to Mile 2, thereby providing a reliable and efficient transportation option.
The Blue Line has attracted a diverse group of commuters, including professionals, entrepreneurs, students, and tourists, contributing positively to the local economy.
Akinajo reported that the service has operated smoothly, with no disruptions, and recently increased its daily trips from 54 to 72, reducing travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from approximately 30 minutes to 18 minutes.
