In an effort to enhance power supply in rural areas and mitigate the impact of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, the Nigerian Federal Government has increased the deployment of mini-grids. The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) revealed this information in a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, stating that these mini-grids would provide round-the-clock electricity to the communities where they were installed.
Ahmed Salihijo, the Managing Director of REA, recently visited the 200KWp Solar Hybrid Mini-Grid in Danchitagi Community, located in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State. He emphasized that this facility, along with others, would reduce the amount of PMS purchased by the community's residents. Salihijo further explained that the Nigeria Electrification Project-Performance Based Grant initiative had already deployed more than 80 similar mini-grids across the country, ensuring equitable access to electricity.
The 200KWp mini-grid in Danchitagi Community was constructed to provide uninterrupted power supply to approximately 2,670 residents, who are predominantly farmers. Out of the 534 electricity consumers connected to the facility, 13 utilize it for various services such as tailoring, welding, refrigeration, milling of rice, and processing other agricultural produce.
Salihijo highlighted the positive feedback received from the community, stating that many individuals currently rely on petrol generators. However, with the introduction of the mini-grid, their reliance on petrol will decrease significantly.
"This could serve as a palliative that will help them cushion the effects of the removal of subsidy," noted the REA boss, referring to the subsidy removal on petrol.
The deployment of mini-grids in rural communities is a significant step towards improving access to electricity and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. By providing reliable power supply, these initiatives contribute to enhancing the livelihoods of residents and supporting economic activities in rural areas.
