Dangote Cement Plc has announced an investment exceeding $280 million in compressed natural gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure.

President Tinubu has been a strong advocate for the deployment of CNG, emphasizing its role in enhancing energy efficiency and fostering economic growth.

As part of this initiative, he has ordered the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles that transport people, food, and goods.

At a recent event, Tinubu highlighted the need for Nigeria to harness its abundant natural gas resources, calling CNG transportation an economic imperative.

He stated, “Utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go.”

Dangote Cement's substantial investment not only reinforces its leadership in the CNG sector but also underscores its commitment to combating climate change and transitioning towards a low-carbon economy.

Arvind Pathak, Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, revealed plans to convert the entire fleet to CNG-powered trucks by mid-2026.

The company has already received its first batch of 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks and anticipates an additional 1,600 trucks, bringing the total to 3,100 by year-end.

Pathak expressed confidence in meeting deployment timelines, with plans to aggressively pursue this transition starting in early 2025. He noted that expanding CNG fueling infrastructure is essential to ensure reliable access for their growing fleet.

Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, emphasized that these investments align with Nigeria's commitment under the Paris Agreement to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
