The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry's newly elected President, Chief Emeka Obegolu (SAN), shared this message in Abuja while extending the chamber's greetings to Christians in Nigeria for the 2023 Christmas celebration.

Though paying taxes is seen as a civic duty and a crucial source of revenue for the government to fulfill its obligations, the excessive and repetitive taxes from government agencies have become a hindrance for companies, as well as micro, small, and medium-scale businesses trying to survive in challenging economic conditions and an unfriendly operating environment.

Business owners and industries have consistently voiced their concerns about the burdensome multiple taxation in many states. They are calling on the government to simplify or reduce the taxes imposed on citizens.

Multiple taxation refers to the situation where businesses face various taxes and levies imposed by different levels of government, placing a significant burden on their financial resources.

In a statement personally signed by the ACCI president, he appealed “to the government at all levels to prioritise the provision of essential infrastructure, streamline tax policies, and enhance the ease of conducting business.”

Recognising that these measures were indispensable for fostering the development and growth of enterprises, Obegolu emphasized the vital role of government support in propelling economic progress.
