The Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Presidential candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, appeared in the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) on Tuesday, as parties prepared to adopt their last written speeches.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the adoption of final addresses is a prerequisite for setting a date for judgment in Atiku and the PDP's appeal disputing the outcome of the Feb. 25 presidential election.
The Justice Haruna Tsammani-led five-member panel of the court had on the last adjourned date directed parties to prepare their final briefs of argument and appear before it to adopt.
The court, in a notice to the parties, invited them to adopt their written address concerning the petition filed against President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, praying the court to nullify their election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on March 1 that Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had won the presidential election ahead of 17 other candidates who competed.
It was announced that Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes, defeating the two major competitors, Atiku of the PDP, who received 6,984,520 votes, and Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who received 6,101,533 votes.
However, displeased with the outcome of the election, both Atiku and Obi petitioned the court to declare it null and void.
The pair contested Tinubu's eligibility to run for office while simultaneously claiming victory in their respective petitions.
The petitioners are asking the court to declare the election invalid and mandate a new presidential election without President Tinubu, who they claim is initially ineligible to run.
