The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has taken a decisive stance against the removal of fuel subsidy, announcing a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on August 2, 2023.
Despite a court order that previously restrained the NLC from striking in June, the Congress is determined to address the dire impact of subsidy removal on Nigerians, leading to widespread hardship.
While the government established a committee to engage with organized labor, the dialogue has fallen short of resolving the contentious issue.
Consequently, the NLC has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding a conclusive negotiation with labor, failing which, the nation will experience widespread industrial action.
As the situation unfolds, the NLC's national president, Joe Ajaero, is yet to make an official statement, but the Congress promises to keep the public informed about further plans in the coming days.
The prospect of a nationwide strike serves as a stark reminder of the pressing concerns surrounding fuel subsidy in Nigeria, urging the government to take decisive action to address the grievances of the people.
