The Federal Government has stated that although the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage is yet to conclude its negotiations, Nigerian workers won't be left behind. Meanwhile, the government confirmed a new minimum wage will be implemented starting May 1, 2024.

The Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, addressed workers on May Day, acknowledging the delay but emphasising ongoing consultations to finalise the details.

Reports by journalists reveal that unions like the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, have pushed for a significant increase, proposing N615,000 as the new minimum wage for workers to cope with the many economic realities and high cost of living in the country. 

They also call attention to the fact that the current N30,000 minimum wage, set in 2019, is inadequate and not always paid by all states.

On his part, President Tinubu applauded the nation's workforce for their contributions to Nigeria's development. He expressed the government's openness to the minimum wage committee's recommendations and reiterated the administration's dedication to progress for Nigeria.
