Residents of Esa Oke in Osun State held a peaceful demonstration on Monday to oppose the purported relocation of certain departments from the College of Technology in the area to Ibokun.
During the protest, local motorcyclists refrained from operating, resulting in commuters having to walk to their destinations.
The demonstrators, accompanied by masquerades, paraded through the town with drumming and dancing, expressing their desire for the removal of Mr. Diran Odeyemi, the chairman of the Governing Council, by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Carrying placards bearing messages such as "No more Diran Odeyemi in OSCOTECH again," and "Diran Odeyemi must go," the protesters blocked the entrance to the community, disrupting vehicular traffic.
Speaking to the press, community spokesperson Prof. Abiodun Oni praised Adeleke for disavowing the relocation plan and called for Odeyemi's removal from the council, advocating for a local representative to be appointed instead.
Oni, a university lecturer, disputed the necessity of a radio station for the Mass Communication program, asserting that only a studio is required.
Odeyemi, responding in a statement from Osogbo, refuted the accusations of department relocation, explaining that the plan was to establish a Mass Communication program in Ibokun due to the availability of training facilities, including a government-owned broadcasting station.
He clarified that only the Mass Communication program, not other established courses, was intended for Ibokun as a satellite campus, under the name "Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, Satellite Campus," aiming to boost student enrollment and enhance training quality.
