The Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has approved the dismissal and legal prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and several other officers found culpable in the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

The decision was announced by Disu at an emergency press conference in Abuja, following a review of the incident by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal disciplinary procedures.

The investigation panel concluded that ASP Usman “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms" and recommended his immediate dismissal alongside other officers implicated in the incident.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” says the IGP.

Disu has endorsed the recommendations and sent them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with official legal procedures.

The unlawful killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by the ASP Usman had triggered widespread outrage online. According to a report from police, the incident happened on April 26, 2026, when personnel attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that Ogidi had been arrested while allegedly trying to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

Dish extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that the incident would be treated with the seriousness it deserved.

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he stated.

The IGP affirmed that the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on unlawful actions and abuse of power, emphasising that the institution is fully dedicated to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability.

He advised members of the public to stay calm and law-abiding, assuring them that the Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its dedication to discipline, professionalism, and the protection of the rights and dignity of all citizens.
