On Wednesday, the leader of South Africa’s ruling political party the African National Congress (ANC), Cyril Ramaphosa, took oath as the president of South Africa for the next five years.

The inauguration was held in Pretoria, the administrative capital.

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria left the country on Tuesday to attend the inauguration in South Africa.

The 71-year-old Ramaphosa was re-elected as South African president by the National Assembly on June 14 with 283 votes, defeating the other contender, Economic Freedom Fighters' Julius Malema, who earned 44 votes.
The president-elect must assume office within five days after being elected by the National Assembly, according to the South African Constitution.

In the general elections on May 29, the ANC secured 159 of the 400 seats in the National Assembly.

This is the first time the ANC has slipped below the 50% threshold required to preserve its 30-year-old absolute majority in the lower house of parliament.
