Nollywood actress Bimbo Ademoye originally had her eyes set on a different role, but she is currently receiving compliments for her work in the recently released "Gangs of Lagos."
Because of her real-life upbringing, the actress initially believed she would be better suited to a street-hardened role.
On April 7, 2023, the Jade Osiberu movie went live on Prime Video. Starring in it were Tobi Bakre, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Chike Osebuka, Chioma Akpotha, and Iyabo Ojo.
Ademoye plays Teni in the movie, the affluent and sheltered daughter of gangster Kazeem (played by Olarotimi Fakunle).
Yet the actress admitted that she originally wanted to play the gangster Gift, who is portrayed by Etomi-Wellington, at a press event before the movie's release.
She said, "When I got the script, I saw a particular character, Gift, breaking bottles. I'm from the hood, from Ebute Metta, breaking bottles is a norm. The lifestyle is a norm for me, so I thought I was going to be Gift, but then I saw I was playing Teni."
The actress claims that the director intended her to portray a different character than what most people would anticipate.
The 32-year-old called Osiberu, who also co-wrote, co-produced, and directed the movie, made sure she hadn't made a mistake with the role she assigned her.
"That kind of touched me because any time she wants to give me a character, she goes beyond something people would expect. That's how much she believes (in me)," she said.
Ademoye is thankful Osiberu trusted her to play Teni, who is also a representation of how she was raised by a single parent in a challenging setting, despite her initial thoughts about the role.
The Sugar Rush star was keen to point out that the main distinction was that her father wasn't anything like the deadly Kazeem in Gangs of Lagos.
"It was like asking me to come and play myself in real life. I'm grateful for the gift of Teni," she said.
The film is the first African Original for Prime Video and part of Osiberu's three-year deal with the streaming platform.
