This matter, which has garnered significant attention, reflects the commitment of WAEC to uphold the integrity of its examinations and ensure fairness in the evaluation of students' academic achievements.
As a noteworthy context, it is essential to recall the statement made by the former WAEC boss, Mr. Patrick Areghan, in August when announcing the results of the WASSCE.
At that juncture, he had disclosed that a substantial number of results, precisely 263,803 in total, had been withheld due to reported cases of malpractice and irregularities. This announcement had raised concerns and underscored the gravity of the issue at hand.
In the earlier statement, Mr. Areghan had conveyed, "On behalf of the Registrar to Council, the Management, and Staff of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, Nigeria, I welcome you to this press briefing to announce the release of the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, for school candidates, 2023 in Nigeria.
Out of a total of 1,613,733 candidates that sat for the examination, the results of 262,803 candidates are being withheld due to reports of cases of examination malpractice."
In the wake of this development, WAEC has taken the initiative to address the matter promptly. An announcement from the Council, released in the early hours of Tuesday, highlights the commencement of the 76th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee to deliberate upon and make determinations regarding the cases of malpractice and irregularities stemming from the administration of the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023.
