The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning, threatening to disrupt academic activities across tertiary institutions in the South-West if student unions are not reinstated.
Speaking to reporters in Osogbo, NANS Southwest Coordinator Owolewa Taiwo emphasized that the ban on student union activities is detrimental to students' welfare.
Taiwo highlighted that several institutions, including Federal Polytechnic, Ede; Osun State Polytechnic, Iree; and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, have prohibited student union activities.
He declared that NANS would not hesitate to organize mass protests at these schools if necessary.
He stated, “The absence of functional Students’ Unions is a glaring affront to the rights and aspirations of Nigerian students. We will not stand idle as students’ voices are silenced.” Taiwo announced a 14-day ultimatum for the University of Lagos, Osun State Polytechnic, and LAUTECH to restore their student unions. Failure to comply will result in significant protests aimed at drawing national attention to the issue.
Additionally, Taiwo urged the Federal Government to extend benefits from the NELFUND scheme to private tertiary institutions, asserting that all Nigerian students deserve access to government assistance regardless of their school type.
